What We Do

Intensifying the fight against cancer
Every nine seconds, someone in the European Union is diagnosed with cancer. In 2022, over 1.3 million lives were lost to this devastating disease. ECL’s vision is a Europe free of cancer. We are at the forefront of the fight – raising awareness, empowering patients, and advocating for change – from prevention to survivorship. Our work spans a wide spectrum of activities, covering the entire cancer continuum.

Prevention
Up to 40% of all cancer cases in the European Union can be prevented. We are taking action to raise awareness, reduce exposure to cancer risk factors, and shape laws that protect people’s health.

Vaccination and Early Detection
Patients diagnosed early have the best chance at effective treatment and long-term survival. Yet, across Europe, access to cancer screening and life-saving vaccinations varies significantly. We promote and share best practices from national and regional cancer leagues and push for bold, coordinated action at both the EU and national levels to ensure equitable access to cancer screening and vaccination programmes for all.

Access to Medicines
Every patient deserves access to effective, affordable, and innovative cancer medicines – no matter where they live. We promote equal access across Europe by advocating for fair pricing, promoting availability of life-saving treatments, and challenging inequalities in access to essential cancer care.

Patient Support
People living with and after cancer are at the heart of our work. With over 12 million cancer survivors in Europe, improving the quality of life for cancer patients, survivors and carers is a must. We advocate for strong social protection and equal access to financial services across Europe, while offering resources to help individuals and their families navigate the physical, emotional, and practical challenges of cancer.
