Letter: REACH revision to prevent disease and reduce health costs

13 January 2026

The Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) has joined the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) and 16 other health groups to call on the European Commission to ensure that the REACH revision will deliver the long-awaited improvement of human health protection from harmful chemicals.

Diseases associated with exposure to hazardous chemical substances include cancer, neurological, metabolic and endocrine disorders, allergies and other acute and chronic health effects.

A health-centred REACH revision would align with the commitments of the EU’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, the Zero Pollution Action Plan, Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and the European Cardiovascular Health Plan. It is urgent to ensure the EU chemicals policy fully encompasses the latest scientific recommendations and reflects real-world exposure.
