Cancer societies from across Europe have elected a new President and welcomed new voices to the Executive Board during the 45th Annual General Assembly of the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), held on 13 November in Porto, Portugal.
We are delighted to introduce Juha Pekka Turunen from the Cancer Society of Finland as ECL’s new President. A medical doctor specialised in clinical pathology with special competency in health administration, Juha Pekka serves as the General Secretary of both the Cancer Society of Finland and Cancer Foundation Finland. His leadership experience includes serving as the President of the Nordic Cancer Union between 2022 and 2023, and he is currently a member of the Steering Committee of the first national cancer strategy in Finland and Chair of the Noncommunicable Diseases Network of Finnish organisations.

Together with ECL’s Executive Director and the Executive Board, Juha Pekka Turunen will help shape ECL’s vision towards a Europe free of cancer.
The ECL Executive Director and Board extend a heartfelt thank you to Ramon Reyes, President of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, for his unwavering commitment and impactful leadership during his time as ECL’s former President.
Welcoming new members to the ECL Executive Board
Delegates from European cancer leagues also elected Lucia Aboud from the Spanish Association Against Cancer to the ECL Executive Board, in addition to re-electing other members of the Board for a second mandate. The Executive Board now brings together seven leaders from cancer societies across Europe, ensuring strong and forward-looking leadership in the years ahead.
