Webinar: PFAS and cancer - What do we know about Forever Chemicals?

20 May 2025

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic chemicals used in a wide range of everyday products – from non-stick frying pans and food packaging to clothes and cosmetics. Known as “forever chemicals” for their ability to persist in the environment for up to 1,000 years, PFAS are increasingly under scientific scrutiny for their links to serious health impacts, including many different types of cancer.

The MEPs Against Cancer Interest Group hosted an important discussion on the growing body of scientific evidence between PFAS and cancer, the widespread use of these substances in consumer goods, and the urgent need for action to reduce people’s exposure. The webinar explored effective policy measures to regulate and eventually phase out harmful forever chemicals and highlighted strategies for promoting safer alternatives.

This webinar was hosted by MEP Tilly Metz (Greens/EFA), Vice-Chair of the MEPs Against Cancer Interest Group, with support from the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL).

Featured speakers included:

  • Tom Buis (Strategic Policy Advisor at the Dutch Cancer Society, representing the Association of European Cancer Leagues – ECL)
  • Paul Speight (Head of Unit, Safe and Sustainable Chemicals at the EU Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment)
  • Sandra Jen (Programme Lead for Health and Chemicals at the Health and Environment Alliance – HEAL)
