ELIZABETH HJORTH

Elizabeth Hjorth was a Board Member of the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) between 2015-2021.

Elizabeth has been the Danish Cancer Society ‘s Legal Advisor of the since 1989, where she assists the management and advises all Society’s departments (i.e. research, prevention, patient support, fundraising, volunteers, advocacy and administration) with general as well as specific legal aspects, including the preparation of statutes, ethical guidelines, administrative guidelines for advisory committees, other administrative codes of practice, commercialisation of research/technology  and contracts with external partners.

Ms Hjorth gained a Law degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1978. She, then, specialised through supplementary education and courses in EU legislation and EU co-operation, patients’ rights, personal data protection legislation, contract law and intellectual property rights.

Between 1978-1980, Elizabeth worked in the private sector focusing on the elaboration of contracts, budgets and financial reports. Subsequently, she worked for 9 years at the Danish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries focusing on EU subsidy schemes and structural adjustments and preparatory legislative work.

Since 1991, she has been involved with a variety of cancer-focused NGOs and initiatives, namely the NCU, UICC, EORTC , McCabe – Center for Law and Cancer and ECL. In particular, Elizabeth has covered the following roles:
• ECL’s Coordinator/secretary  1990 – 1993
• Nordic Cancer Union (NCU)’s Coordinator 1998 – 2002 and 2018-2020
• Member of UICC’s Nominating Committee 2006 – 2010
• Member of Board of the EORTC Charitable Trust 2006 – 2017
